What are Champions in Clash Royale?
Champions are cards of a special rarity added to Clash Royale during the October 2021 update and can be unlocked at King Level 14.
As of March 2025, Clash Royale has seven champion cards: Archer Queen, Goblinstein, Golden Knight, Little Prince, Mighty Miner, Monk, and Skeleton King. Each of these cards has its special ability, which can be used at the expense of elixir.
- One deck can have only one champion card.
- Once a champion is laid into the arena, players won’t be able to deploy another champion until the existing one gets destroyed.
- Champions have their special abilities: Cloaking Cape – Archer Queen, Dashing Dash – Golden Knight, and Soul Summoning – Skeleton King.
- Abilities have a cooldown timer. Using an ability costs elixir(s).
When were Champions added to Clash Royale?
After a maintenance break on 27 October 2021, Clash Royale has added three new champions to the game along with King Level 14. The new champions were Golden Knight, Archer Queen, and Skeleton King. Players with King Level 14 or higher could unlock these champions.
The idea of adding champions to Clash Royale (CR) was brought about by the addition of King Level 14 in the game. CR uploaded a video on their YouTube channel teasing the audience with the discovery that the King made when he accidentally discovered a path to a mysterious place. He then discovered the three new champions and went further to revive them.
On this teaser, the King discovered a special map where the champions could be found…
As you can see in the image (Picture courtesy: Above YouTube video), the King discovered the map that would lead him to the places where the Three Champions were resting or training (God Knows!). The one with the Bow marks the area of the Archer Queen, and the one with the Big Sword and skeletons around it marks the area of Skeleton King.
Following it, another video was uploaded by Clash Royale continued the King’s search for the heroes which was supported by the Royal Recruits. Three recruits started onto three different ways that leaded to three different heroes. They handed over the invitation letter to the respective champions and later on the champions headed towards the Arena and they arrived into Clash Royale.
3-Card Cycle
Players can achieve a 3-card cycle in Clash Royale by using Champions.
- Players can deploy only one champion in the Arena at once.
- To get another Champion in the cycle, players need to deploy at least four cards.
- As long as the Champion stays alive, players can cycle to their cards in a cycle of 3 cards only.
How can one unlock the champions in Clash Royale?
One can get their first Champion as a reward from the Trophy Road when they reach Arena 16.
Chests
The Champion Chest contains a single Champion card. In addition, the Legendary King's Chest has a high probability of yielding a Champion card.
However, when champions were first added to Clash Royale, players could only unlock them at King Level 14. Nonetheless, players below level 14 could also enjoy using the champions in Special Challenges by Clash Royale.

Goblinstein

Special Ability: Explosive Escape
Special Ability Description: He burrows underground and digs out to the horizontally mirrored position, leaving a big bomb as a goodbye gift. Mines underground to the opposite lane, leaving a bomb at the original location. Surprise!
Archer Queen

Skeleton King
Special Ability: Summouning Souls
Special Ability Description: Collects the “souls” of all Troops that die in the Arena. Activating this ability spawns those souls as Skeleton Troops, similar to Graveyard.
Rumors are that a Champion from the Goblins Clan will join Clash Royale in the future.
